I was talking to a friend last night about an academic project I would like to take on. “So what’s stopping you?” asked my Logical Friend? My answer was two part. Firstly, in this phase of my life I would struggle to make enough time to do it properly without other aspects of my life suffering. “OK – so do it later” replied the LF who had smelled a rat and wasn’t going to let me get away with it. She was right, of course. The second part – my real reason was Fear. Fear of failing. Fear of having to acknowledge that I really couldn’t achieve this project. Of course my LF had exactly the right reply. “That’s exactly the reason you should do it”, she said, briskly. “Otherwise you’ll always have that fear.” Too true. So watch this space.

Susan Jeffers’s book “Feel the fear and do it anyway” is excellent. She looks at fear in all its manifestations and at all its different effects. Then she goes on to take the reader through a step by step journey of conquering that fear. At the heart of what she is saying in the mantra,

“PUSHING THROUGH FEAR IS LESS FRIGHTENING THAN LIVING WITH THE UNDERLYING FEAR THAT COMES FROM A FEELING OF HELPLESSNESS.”

So that’s all very well. But what if you know what your fear is and you know you want to overcome it but you don’t know how to start? It doesn’t matter how mundane or huge that fear may appear to you, if you have decided to overcome it but can’t start that process, you are not going to overcome it. It may be that you need support and I would love to help you. With my support you can put a plan together that works for you. I will support you in sticking to that plan as well. As with so many things in life, a situation or goal can be given clarity by talking it through with someone who is objective and non-judgemental. That is what I do at Alice Johnsen Life Coaching.
